Solver-specific metric-checks

"[T]wo extremely similar meshes yielded vastly different results"

Pointwise offers several metrics which is great, but what if you’ve evolved a set that works for you and that’s all you want to use? Is there any way to avoid feeling overloaded? Since this is the wonderful world of software, the problem is easily solved. Use this script as an example of how you can indeed employ context-specific quality checks with Pointwise.

An SU2 developer’s grid-requirements

"We know embarrassingly little about how the mesh affects the CFD solution"

The grid-guidelines question hasn’t gotten any easier to answer since Professor Ollivier-Gooch’s observation was recorded in this article. It’s interesting, then, to hear Eduardo Molina on how he decides what grid to use. His talk is worth viewing in its entirety, but don’t forget to catch (at about 3:04:25 in the video) the answer to the question “Are there any guidelines that have evolved for mesh quality metrics?

How to create histograms using Tecplot

"[O]ne of the seven basic tools of quality control"

Tecplot’s handy scripts provide lots of utility functions, one of which is today’s highlight. Histograms are are not often used for CFD postprocessing but not all data that Tecplot’s used for comes from CFD. Even for CFD, histograms can provide useful insights into behavior. Start Tecplot and load your data, turn on Python connections, then run this script to get plots like the one shown here. Remember to specify the name of the variable and the number of bins on the command-line! Let us know if you need help.
